The Foundations of Fertility

Fertility has become one of my favorite topics in my practice because it’s surprisingly taboo. For many of us, we spend our whole lives avoiding fertility except for a few brief years in which we may try to conceive. The powers that be have made fertility something to fear, lest you get unintentionally pregnant and then have to face the many associated challenges in patriarchal society.

But here is the thing- fertility is the basis of our health. Fertility is our body’s capacity to create life, whether this life takes the form of a baby, a business, an art project, or a life’s purpose. We can absolutely take precautions to ensure we don’t unintentionally conceive AND we can support our body’s vital life force.

Even if you don’t plan to have children or are out of childbearing age, we can all implement these foundations of fertility to ensure the basis of our health. The more we support our body’s capacity to create, the more vitality we have for all of our passions.

Without further ado, these are my favorite daily practices to support fertility from the root up:

  1. Get hydrated! Our bodies are 70% water and hydration is the basis of our overall health. Hydration allows our lymph to transport hormones, detox cellular waste, and nourish the reproductive organs. Also, all of our reproductive fluids are made primarily of water! If you’re dehydrated it’s much more challenging for the body to produce cervical fluid to transport sperm (and to feel juicy in life in general!)

    • My top recommendation for hydration is starting the day with a glass of warm water with unprocessed sea salt. The electrolytes in the salt help your body absorb water and transport it to the cells.

  2. Poop every day! Pooping is the number one way our body detoxifies wastes and hormones in our bodies. Healthy hormone health is a major pillar of fertility. If you aren’t releasing toxins, the liver will have a much more difficult time metabolizing the hormones that are essential for overall health.

My top poop support remedies are:

    • Taking magnesium glycinate every night before bed - this also helps with getting deep sleep

    • Eating fiber rich foods daily (cauliflower, broccoli, kale, flax, chia, other fruits and veggies)

  3. Move your lymph! As mentioned prior, our lymph is a key pillar of our hormonal and detox health. The best way to move the lymph is to sweat and move your body. Try to do some form of exercise every day (walking, running, dancing, yoga, etc) and ideally sweat every day as well. To learn more about the lymph and how to support it, read my article.

  4. Self massage! Another great way to move the lymph is self massage, especially around the breasts and womb, where lymph is concentrated. This helps stagnant hormones to flow and nourish the reproductive tissues. Want to learn how to do your own lymphatic self massage? You can get the free 5 minute tutorial here.

  5. Eat Nutrient Dense Foods! Our body is only going to consider creating a baby (or any other creative project) if we are properly nourished. This means filling our plates and bodies with foods that give us lots of minerals, healthy fats, protein, fiber and complex carbohydrates. These are my favorite foods for fertility and I try to eat some of each every day:

    • Meats: Beef (especially ancestral blends with organs included), sardines, mussels, oysters, liver

    • Veggies: cruciferous veggies that support liver detox (cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale), celery, squash, etc.

    • Nutrient Dense Root Vegetables: sweet potatoes, beets, carrots

    • Essential Fatty Acids: olive oil, tahini, fish oil
